Once again I trouble your eyes with my opinion. But hey, at least I don’t use a KEWL nickname to win you over! Okay, enough chit chat. There’s a review.around here somewhere….
If you read only one webcomic this year, make it Lackadaisy. I’m serious. Read it.
Well, read it isn’t quite the correct word, either. Like a bottle of fine wine or a good book, you’ll have to actually experience the work in all of it’s detail before you can truly appreciate it on all the levels it has to offer. From the characters to the storyline to the imaginative take on the time period it’s set in, the work is just incredible. Although I cannot possibly do it justice here, I’ll once again use the Power of the Peerless Prose and do my best.
Lackadaisycats (www.lackadaisycats.com) by Tracy J. Butler is a real hoot – the bee’s knees, the cat’s pajamas (literally in some scenes), a zoot suit riot. Can you tell I enjoyed it?
The comic starts out with a nicely illustrated introduction showing how the Lackadaisy Speakeasy in St. Louis came to be. Unfortunately, the ‘cat’ in charge meets an untimely end as prohibition is in full swing. His widow, enswirled in rumors that she was involved now owns the Speakeasy. The story builds nicely, never really slowing down and yet not rushed, either. Times are rough and competition is fierce in the liquor trade. Even the pig farmers will literally nail you to the railroad tracks if they think you’re trying to horn in on their action.
The alcohol-free era of the Eighteenth Amendment. Gangsters and speakeasies. Kitties. There is absolutely no way that the combination of the above could be anything but completely awesome. Heck, it may also be, in some respects, a cultural milestone, something that should be preserved behind Plexiglas at a museum for future generations to admire and imitate. Tracy J. Butler draws all these elements together with lush illustrations to boot in her critically beloved webcomic, Lackadaisy.
