ad1997 review by The Doctor

Welcome back! If you read my first review and came back again, congrats! If you read it and didn’t come back, then who are you and why are you posing as someone else?

Ok, I admit it. I don’t have the time to sit and read through 2 or 3 years of archives in order to get the big picture of the webcomic, talk about the evolution of the art, and all those other fancy things that artists do. Why? Well, if I told you that I’d give away information that could be detrimental to my secret identity (I’m NOT crazy – read the bio! They wrote it, I didn’t) so you’ll just have to take my word for it. Despite that, I do my level darndest to read as much of the webcomic as I can in order to give what I consider to be a relatively informed opinion on the comic.

Justification? Hardly. More to keep the webcomic review flamers out there from wasting their time ranting about all that I missed. Everyone up to speed? Good. Now I won’t have to repeat it.

AD 1997, overall, is a pretty good comic. I’m glad to see that even though it reminds me a bit of anime (quite a bit, actually, though I am not an anime fan, per se), it’s not the Pokemon type Japanimation (No, I’m not P.C. either) that is becoming so prevalent today. The art is clean and well drawn, with good use of shading and expression.

One of the better points is that, even in a comic book kind of fashion, the characters al least look human; to me, it’s always a plus when the human characters look human instead of some strange “Superman the Animated Series/Teen Titans”(shudder) human with exaggerated torsos and upper bodies, gigantic eyes and little tiny legs.

The storyline is interesting, if not a bit complex, and shows real imagination on the part of the author. Even though the “big corporation with secrets to hide” plot has been done to death (what one hasn’t?) the way in which it’s presented is, I feel, engaging. Even though the sheer volume of comics would make it a tough one for me to re-read, I would have no problem recommending it to others.

I give it 4 stars. And remember, kids, “that’s my opinion and only holds true to me.” Enjoy!
