Tales of Pylea

Posted on June 13th, 2008 by The Doctor in Jay, comics, three stars

Jay Slay, the DoctorThis was a hard one to write a review for, namely because overall, the comic held very little appeal for me. Unlike other comics, however, it was not due to being un-family friendly, or horrid artwork, or vulgarity. Quite the contrary I found the artwork to be quite good (if not somewhat familiar - I think a lot of the webcomic artists out there went to the same courses and learned their trade). The lines are clean and crisp, and the comic itself well laid out and smooth. On that note, though, I have to say I didn’t care for the dialogue lettering. It looked far too much like someone had taken a comic strip and did cut/paste from a word processor. Something about it just didn’t match up with the artwork, and that kept drawing my eye away from the comic proper.

Tales of PyleaThe second negative for me (which was NOT the artist’s fault by any means) was the sheer volume of comics to go through. There’s a lot here, and since most of it seems to be exposition and setting, that translated into a lot to slog through.

Would I recommend the comic to others? Absolutely. I didn’t find anything to not recommend it. Would I go back and re-read it or follow it? Probably not. I’m more of an action type, myself.

All I can say is, give it a go and see what you think!

For things about the comic that I, personally didn’t like and were mainly attributed to my own tastes, I give the comic 3 stars. Rating: ★★★☆☆

The Doctor reviews Dresden Codak

Posted on June 6th, 2008 by The Doctor in Jay, comics, two stars

Dresden CodakThis will probably be one of my shorter posts, as compared to some of my others. Why? Because although I didn’t really care for the comic itself, I don’t necessarily have anything bad to say about it, per se; actually, I don’t have a lot to say about it, period.

The comic was, to me, confusing in the extreme, and that took a lot away for me. I suppose it’s because it may have used a lot of gag references or subject matter that I simply didn’t get, or simply because I’m from another time and so I don’t get a lot of references, period, that modern and edgy comics made. When I read through archives and the prime thought that keeps going through my mind is either “Huh?” or “What the–?!” (that’s a hidden reference for those of you in the know) I can pretty well figure that I’m not going to get a lot out of it. My apologies to the author on that score.

The art, also, was a bit on the jangled side, to my eye. Like a sentence that leaves off in the middle or is needlessly convoluted, it never seemed to follow any kind of pattern or layout other than having frames that divided the page and art inside the frames. That makes it a hard comic for me to read, let alone enjoy.

Jay Slay, the DoctorI also didn’t find it especially funny or engaging, as I mentioned above. There wasn’t really anything to bring me back to read it again and again, but also nothing jumped out at me as being particularly family-unfriendly or out of line, either. It simply didn’t appeal to me.

For generally being confusing and not seeming to have a lot of humor or intrinsic value, I give it 2 stars. Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Geeks Next Door review by Jay Slay

Posted on May 16th, 2008 by Moderator in Jay, comics, one star

Jay Slay, the DoctorThis week’s review deals with Geeks Next Door, a webcomic done in the finest tradition of “overused cliché” meets “very low grade anime.” Even a cutting edge (heh) show like Teen Titans would be ashamed of this comic.

That’s pretty straightforward, isn’t it?
